Median Response Scale (M) in the Giessen Personality Questionnaire (GT) does not measure any personality trait directly but performs an evaluative (methodological) function, reflecting the respondent's attitude toward the testing procedure. It records the frequency of using the middle response option, which corresponds to a neutral, balanced, or undecided position regarding a statement.
Scale M serves as an indicator of the response pattern to the questionnaire items. An increased or decreased number of median responses may indicate not only personality traits but also external factors affecting the reliability of the results.
A high level on the M scale may indicate:
- Tendency toward uncertainty – a possible desire to avoid categoricity, striving to be "objective";
- Caution or doubt – the capacity for strong, deep feelings but reluctance in their open expression;
- Low engagement – insufficient interest in the test, fatigue, or mechanical completion of the task;
- Response bias – a desire to answer in a socially desirable way or avoidance of undesirable interpretations;
- Secretiveness – reluctance to disclose personal information.
Average values may indicate a balanced evaluation style, in which:
- avoidance of extremes is combined with a readiness for certainty;
- a perception is formed that takes into account nuances and differences;
- a meaningful attitude toward the statements is demonstrated;
- there are no signs of pronounced uncertainty or excessive categoricity;
- the choice of responses indicates moderate interest and adequate understanding of the questionnaire content.
A low level on the M scale may indicate:
- Definite position – confident determination of the attitude toward statements, avoidance of neutral formulations;
- Impulsivity or categoricity – a possible tendency toward polar, harsh judgments;
- Good self-understanding – a high level of self-reflection and readiness for openness.
Features of use:
- In the "Self" (I) version, a high indicator may point to internal uncertainty, difficulty in self-assessment, or a desire to smooth over the impression;
- In the "He" and "She" versions – to difficulties in interpreting another person's behavior, a lack of knowledge about them, social distance, or caution in judgment.
Scale M is not used independently for personality interpretation but helps judge the reliability and nature of responses. In combination with other scales, it can reveal distortions related to defensive attitudes or peculiarities of cognitive and emotional perception.
